Project #3: Dot Day

 Dot Day!

In class, we listened to the book called The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. The book was about a young girl, named Vashti, who looked down on herself and her drawing abilities. Her teacher encouraged her to began her drawing with a singular dot, which later than turned into bigger art pieces.

For the project, we had to create our own dot. We began with a coffee filter and created a design of our choice using markers, crayons, oil pastels, and sharpies. Once we used our dry mediums, we then took watercolor to make the colors bleed.

Extension Activity: to extend off of the activity above, I could have students take their individual dots and combine them into a larger art piece/mural on a bulletin board. We then could discuss the different styles between the dots and how the colors all look together.

Project #2: Elements and Principles

Elements of Art and Principles of Design Scavenger Hunt

Description: For this activity, we had to go on a scavenger hunt and take pictures that portrayed the elements of art and principles of design. We were asked to capture a minimum of twelve photos that represented these principles and designs: lines, shapes, texture, space, value, color, balance, movement, contrast, unity/variety, emphasis, and pattern. We then had to create a presentation of some type that included the twelve photos along with age-appropriate definitions for the grade level of choosing. My partner and I chose K-2.

Extension Activity: For an extension activity, I could have a stack of photos (could be ones I took, others took, or printed) that show the elements and principles. The students could complete a sorting activity where they have to take the images and sort them into groups based on the element or principle (e.g., a one pile showing color, another pile showing lines, a third pile showing shapes, etc.). After they're done sorting, we could talk through why they sorted them the way they did.

Footprint Introduction

 Description:

The footprint introduction project was designed to show who I am as a person. The art was to introduce myself to my class, which can also be used to introduce myself in my classroom one day. We had to trace our footprint and cut it out. The project required three different media types and was graded off of craftsmanship, the use of media, the inclusion of our name, and the use of space.

Symbols:

A picture of my family to represent who all makes up my family

An "H" to represent my hometown of Huron and where I hope to return to teach

An iced coffee because I have an iced coffee addiction

A drawing of a dog to represent the three dogs I have

A musical note to represent my love of attending concerts

A purse to represent one of my favorite hobbies -- shopping

A drawing of a steak because that's my favorite food

An "A+" to represent my future career as an elementary teacher

A baby announcement to represent me becoming a first time aunt

Extension Activity: A You and Me Venn Diagram Project

I would pair the students up with another student in the classroom. The students would create a Venn diagram that displays the similarities and differences between them. Once the students have created their Venn diagram, they can discuss and reflect on what they share and what they don't share.
